How Wedding Photography Packages Work in Australia

The first photography quote lands in your inbox and looks straightforward.

Eight hours. One photographer. Online gallery.

The next one costs more, but includes two photographers and an album. Another covers six hours and promises hundreds more images. By the third PDF, comparing the total is easier than understanding what the total actually buys.

Wedding photography packages Australia-wide are rarely built to the same formula. Coverage time, team size, editing, travel and finished products can all change the price.

The simplest way to compare them is to ignore the package names for a moment and look at what happens between the photographer arriving and your final gallery being delivered.

Coverage time usually creates the first difference between packages.

Four or six hours can suit a registry wedding, an elopement or a celebration held largely in one place. Eight hours gives more room for preparations, the ceremony, family photographs, portraits and the early reception. Longer coverage becomes useful when there are several locations or when speeches and the dance floor matter to the gallery.

There is no universal number.

An Australian photographer responding on Easy Weddings in June 2026 suggested that packages around $1,500 often cover roughly four to six hours, packages near $3,000 tend to cover most of the day, and larger collections may extend into full-day coverage with additional people or products. Those are examples rather than fixed market bands.

Before choosing hours, sketch the day.

Write down preparation locations, ceremony time, travel, family photographs, portraits, reception entry, speeches and the first dance. Then decide which moment you want the photographs to begin with and where you want them to finish.

Team size changes both the price and the way the day can be covered.

One photographer may be enough when preparations, ceremony and reception happen close together. Two photographers become more useful when both partners are getting ready in different places, a large guest list creates several things happening at once, or you want simultaneous reactions during the ceremony.

Ask who will actually attend.

Easy Weddings’ February 2026 comparison of 11 Australian photographers shows how much team structure varies. Some packages use one photographer, while others offer a second photographer as an additional service. Its Melbourne ATEIA example lists a second photographer at $990, with that supplier information marked current February 2025.

That does not mean every wedding needs two people.

Pay for the second photographer when the schedule gives them useful work to do.

Most photography packages include an edited digital gallery.

That does not usually mean every photograph captured during the wedding.

The photographer may take thousands of frames, remove duplicates, test shots and unusable images, then edit the selected gallery for colour, exposure and consistency.

Ask three practical questions.

  • How many finished photographs should you expect?
  • How will they be delivered?
  • When should the gallery arrive?

Image count deserves some perspective. A package promising more photographs is not automatically stronger. Ten versions of a similar frame do not necessarily carry more value than a tighter gallery with clear variation.

Delivery timing should appear in the quote or contract. Do not rely on a conversation from months earlier.

One quote may look expensive until you notice that an album is already included.

Another may be digital-only.

Albums involve design, printing, materials and revision time, so remove them from the comparison when you do not want one. If you do want printed work, compare the size, page count, materials and revision process rather than the word “album.”

This can also spread the cost. Some couples prefer to receive the gallery first, choose the photographs they continue returning to, then order the album later.

Easy Weddings’ February 2026 photography cost report places the Australian average at $3,567, up 5 per cent from the previous year. Its Victorian average is $3,597. The survey also reports that 90 per cent of couples hire a professional photographer.

The overall wedding budget has moved too. Easy Weddings’ 2026 survey of more than 4,000 engaged and recently married couples reported an average Australian wedding spend of $38,252. Couples began with an average budget of $29,471, meaning the final figure was about 23 per cent higher than initially planned.

These numbers are useful for context. They are not a recommended price.

A four-hour digital collection and a ten-hour package with two photographers and an album are different purchases.

The older Melbourne-specific guide reported an average of $3,414 in 2025. The newer 2026 Victorian figure of $3,597 is the better reference when you want current pricing context.

When comparing Melbourne wedding photography packages, use the current quote in front of you rather than trying to force it into an industry average.

Additional services can change a package quickly.

Common additions include extra hours, another photographer, engagement sessions, albums, prints, drone photography, travel and faster delivery.

Easy Weddings’ February 2026 package comparison includes a Melbourne supplier example with separate charges for additional coverage, a second photographer, drone photography, albums and travel beyond its included area. The supplier pricing in that example is marked current February 2025, so use it to understand package structure rather than as current market pricing.

Ask for the additional-hour rate before the wedding.

If speeches run late and you want the photographer to stay, you should know what that decision costs while the schedule is still being planned.

Travel deserves the same attention. Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, Phillip Island and interstate weddings may involve mileage, accommodation or earlier arrival requirements.

Searches for “affordable wedding photographer Melbourne” often focus on the headline total. A more useful comparison asks whether the package already covers the hours, travel and finished work you need.

Some studios offer photography and videography together.

This can reduce planning because both teams work from one schedule. It can also make ceremony positions, portraits and reception coverage easier to coordinate.

It is not automatically cheaper.

Compare a combined quote with separate photography and videography quotes using the same hours and deliverables. A combined collection may cost more because it includes more finished work.

Then compare photography and film separately. One portfolio should not carry the other.

The package page explains the offer. The contract defines the booking.

Check the date, locations, assigned photographer, hours, payment schedule, travel costs and expected delivery period.

Read what happens if the wedding is postponed or the photographer becomes unavailable.

Australian Consumer Law gives you automatic guarantees when purchasing services. Services must be supplied with due care and skill, and they must be fit for an agreed purpose.

Consumer Affairs Victoria also explains that businesses cannot propose, use or rely on unfair terms in standard-form consumer contracts. Its guidance was updated in February 2026.

Check who is receiving the deposit. The ACCC recommends confirming business registration and contact information, and points consumers towards ABN Lookup and ASIC records as useful checks.

Image use belongs in the agreement too. The Copyright Agency notes that, where there is no agreement stating otherwise, a client commissioning private wedding photographs or video may be the first copyright owner. Your own contract still needs to explain what applies to the booking.

Some venues may also require photographers to hold public liability insurance. Ask early rather than discovering the requirement shortly before the wedding.

Put the quotes next to each other and remove the package names.

Then compare:

  • Coverage hours.
  • Number of photographers.
  • Travel.
  • Expected gallery size.
  • Delivery timing.
  • Albums or prints.
  • Extra-hour rates.
  • Engagement sessions.
  • Photography and film inclusions.
  • Deposit and payment dates.
  • Cancellation and postponement terms.

You will usually see why the totals differ.

The right package is the one that reaches the moments you care about without filling the quote with additions you would never choose separately.

  • Wedding photography packages are mainly shaped by coverage time, team size and finished products.
  • The 2026 Australian photography average is $3,567, while the current Victorian average is $3,597.
  • Use averages for context rather than treating them as a standard package price.
  • Compare galleries, travel, albums, delivery timing and additional-hour rates before judging the total.
  • A combined photography and film package can simplify planning, but compare both portfolios separately.
  • Read the contract and confirm the business receiving your deposit before paying.

How much do wedding photography packages Australia-wide cost?

Easy Weddings reports a 2026 Australian photography average of $3,567. Individual quotes can sit below or above that figure because coverage, experience, team size, travel and albums vary.

How many hours should we book?

Start with the timeline. Four to six hours may suit a compact wedding, while eight hours can reach from preparations into the reception. Several locations or a late finish may require more.

Does a more expensive package mean better photography?

No. A larger quote may simply include more hours, another photographer or printed products. Review full galleries and compare equivalent inclusions before judging value.

Should we book an album immediately?

Not necessarily. You can ask whether the album may be ordered after the gallery arrives. Waiting can give you more time to choose the photographs you genuinely want printed.

What should we check before paying a deposit?

Confirm the business, read the contract and check the date, photographer, hours, travel, delivery period, cancellation terms and payment schedule. The ACCC recommends verifying business information when dealing with an unfamiliar supplier.
